Eye of the Artist
"What color is that?,"
asks the artist while observing things around her.
"Is it red? no...Alizarin Crimson. Or maybe not"
"What about the sky? See those trees? sap green I'd say...and a bit of Cad Yellow where the sun hits."
Sap green... there is one i can wrap my head around.. it's green!
Don't forget to leave some dark in there. "You must have some dark to show the light" - wise words of a famous tv artist, now deceased...yet still revered and respected by many.
"Wow! how do I mix This color?", studying a field by the paved road.
And just what color is pavement? grey? gray? blue-grey? a little brown in it too?
How can I paint the shimmering on a distant highway? or even out in the desert to the sides of the highway? Way out there, you know.
Shimmering...like a pool of water on the highway up ahead in the sweltering sun. They move too!!
The new artist has an entirely new perspective on his world now. Everything has colors, values, hues, blends,
perspective, proportion, tones and shading now occupy her mind.
"How would I paint this scene?"
"How can I possibly achieve this result?" Is the sky pink?
I think it is alizarin crimson that mixed with the Magic White... ummmm yeah... perfect.
and purple clouds? let's try Pthalo Blue with a touch of red and a touch of burnt umber for that.
just streak it across the Crimson sunset sky.. did that work?? nooooooo... ok, neeeexxxxxxxt?
What color is a bluebonnet?
Pthalo blue? Prussian blue??
What about violet? or blue and the tiniest touch of red?
and white mixed in for lightness.
Prussian... is that a Communist country or something?
Hundreds of questions...dozens of answers flood the mind.
And the artist's eye still observes. Many new names for colors now exist in his/her world.
"What is a Pthalo??" "What brush do I use for this effect?"
Ooohhhh... wait a minit! That brush costs $58 dollars??
forget it. yeah, ok I've seen more pricey brushes too.
but you need quality to do good work.
"What new world have I entered here?" The artist's eyes have completely changed from what they were before.
New colors have become apparent as well as darks and lights in everything around them.
What if I want to paint seascapes?
that's blue, right?
blue sky, blue water...
red sky? yellow sky?? stormy?
rocks?? lighthouses? seagulls? headlands??
waves? calm? breakers? and maybe dolphins in the air too??
whew!!!
"What will I paint today?" Geeee I'm tired already.
